On July 14, the non-profit organization, Kids in Training (KIT) will be bringing their brand of fun and fitness for the kids to the South Lakes Community in Fuquay Varina, with the KIT Youth Triathlon. The event will begin at 8:30 a.m. and offers three different age groups, ranging from the youngest at 5-7, a middle group at 8-10, and then the oldest group running from 11-17 year olds.
The triathlon, not only open to the great families of South Lakes but also to all interested youngsters and families in the Fuquay, Holly Springs and surrounding areas, will kick off on the morning of the 14th at the South Lakes Community pool. Swimming will be the first area tackled by the kids and this first portion of the vent will last about one hour, with a different child starting every 10-20 seconds. Moving on from the pool, biking will be the second leg, as once the kids leave the pool area, their bicycles will be waiting in the adjacent parking lot/transition area. Peddling out onto Jones Lake Road, the youngsters will head down and take a left on Eastern Parkway until arriving to the trail entrance off Glenville Lake. They will then exit out by Appalachia Lake and ride back up toward the South Lakes Clubhouse to complete their 1.5 mile lap. The youngest group (5-7) will do one lap, the middle (8-10) will take this route twice around, while the older children (11-17) will make three passes around. After dismounting from their bikes, the final stage is running. The runners will also start at the transition area and head back out and down Jones Lake to the trail and then back up to the starting point. Based again on age level, there will be three turnaround points on the trail, as the three groups will either turn at the half-mile, one mile, or mile and a half point marked on the trail. Following the race, refreshments will be served in addition to their being a special “tot race” featuring the very young children (under 5), a raffle, and the handing out of awards.
The Kids in Training group, a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization has a mission to work with children and their families to create an active and nutritious lifestyle by using natural surroundings to build a healthy community while sustaining a strong environment for all. KIT is looking for volunteers to help out with this great event at South Lakes and is even offering free registration for the triathlon to any families interested in joining the race committee as well as discounts volunteers. All proceeds from the triathlon will go towards helping at risk kids and their families in the surrounding area.
