Healthcare
“Happiness and health is all the wealth one needs…”
Originally known as Memorial Hospital of Wake County upon opening its doors in 1961, WakeMed is now a three-hospital, 919-bed, private not-for-profit health system based in Raleigh. The home WakeMed Campus was home to North Carolina’s first freestanding children’s emergency department and is designated a Level 1 trauma center by the North Carolina Office of Emergency Medical Services. Additionally, WakeMed has more than a dozen facilities located throughout Wake County.
A constant in local healthcare and state wide as well, UNC Rex Healthcare, a member of UNC Healthcare, was initially founded in 1894. It is a private not-for-profit healthcare system and also has multiple facilities around Wake County. UNC Healthcare and Rex have a total combined 1,463 beds at their various locations across the Triangle region.
Newer than the first two systems listed, but possibly the most respected and recognized healthcare system in NC. Duke University Health System was founded in 1998. It is a 957-bed tertiary and quaternary-care hospital, and Duke is consistently rated as one of the top hospitals in the United States.
